Raphinha’s feats in La Liga
Raphinha has just scored for Barcelona hat-tricks in two consecutive La Liga matches: against Racing (7–2) and Sevilla (3–1).
This marks the 11th time such a feat has occurred in the competition this century (see table for the list) and the first time since 2018 (Antoine Griezmann).
All 10 previous instances took place between 2010 and 2018, a period when Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, and Luis Suárez dominated La Liga. Each of them achieved this feat more than once. Suárez, however, stands out: he is the only player on the list to have scored two pokers in a row, to have achieved the feat twice in a single calendar year (2016), and to have had one of his feats span two seasons (a hat-trick in the final match of the 2015–16 season followed by another in the opening match of 2016–17).
Interestingly, there are no Spaniards on this list: all 11 instances of back-to-back hat-tricks were achieved by foreign players.
In total, there have been 31 instances in the competition’s history where a player scored consecutive hat-tricks.
Two players even managed three straight hat-tricks: Isidro Lángara in 1934–35 and Telmo Zarra in 1946–47. Raphinha has the chance to join their record if he manages to score three goals in his next La Liga match as well.
Raphinha’s hat-trick against Sevilla qualifies as a “perfect” one (goals scored with both feet and the head). This is the fourth such hat-trick for Barcelona in La Liga this century. Previous instances:
April 8, 2001: Patrick Kluivert (4–4 vs Villarreal)
December 21, 2002: Patrick Kluivert (4–0 vs Mallorca)
May 2, 2015: Luis Suárez (8–0 vs Córdoba)
Barcelona players have recorded three other such hat-tricks in the XXI century in other competitions (Eto’o in the Champions League; Pedro and Arda in the Copa del Rey).
Curiously, none of Messi’s 36 La Liga hat-tricks were perfect.
Raphinha has scored 12 goals in the opening 7 rounds of La Liga. In the tournament’s history, only one other Barcelona player has managed to score as many during this initial stretch—and it wasn’t Messi, but Mariano Martín, back in the 1943–44 season.
Among players from other clubs, only two have scored more in the first seven rounds: Echevarría in that same 1943–44 season (14 goals for Oviedo) and Cristiano Ronaldo in 2014–15 (13 for Real Madrid).
