Shobeir joins World Cup record for penalty saves
Egypt’s Mostafa Shobeir saved Lionel Messi’s penalty in a round of 16 game vs Argentina (2-3) and became the 4th goalkeeper in the history of the World Cup to save two penalties (excluding shootouts) in a single edition, following Jan Tomaszewski (1974), Brad Friedel (2002) and Wojciech Szczesny (2022).
All four goalkeepers kept 100% success rate in penalty duels at the World Cup. Apart from the two saved (in the table below), none of them faced a penalty in either this edition of the World Cup or any other.
Friedel and Szczesny saved penalties in two consecutive game of their teams.
Iker Casillas is another goalkeeper with two saved penalties. However, they occurred in two different editions of the World Cup (2002 and 2010).
