UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE 2025/26 HIGHLIGHTS
Statistics on Champions’ League 2025-26: Round of 16
*For the first time ever four teams from a single nation (England: Chelsea, Manchester City, Newcastle, Tottenham Hotspur) have been eliminated at the same stage of a season in the Champions League.
*Two English teams have conceded 8+ goals on aggregate in a Round of 16 tie in the current UCL edition (Chelsea vs PSG 2-8, Newcastle vs Barcelona 3-8).
This happened only once before, at any knock-out stage, in the UCL history since 1992:
Arsenal vs Bayern 2-10 in 2016-17, also Round of 16 (1-5 and 1-5).
Also this happened once in the European Cup era:
Wolverhampton vs Barcelona 2-9 in the 1959-60 quarter-finals (0-4 and 1-5).
*It was the highest scoring Round of 16 in the UCL history since 1992: 68 goals in 16 games. The previous record for this stage was 62 goals in 2016-17.
In the European Cup era (1955-1992), more prolific Round of 16 was in two occasions: in 1955-56 (71 goals) and 1959-60 (74 goals).
Atalanta vs Bayern 1-6, 1-4 (agg 2-10)
*Atalanta became the first Italian team to concede 10+ goals in two legs of a knockout stage round in major European competitions.
*This Champions League edition is 4th of last 6 without Italian teams in the quarter-finals.
*Bayern are the first team in the history of European competitions to score 5+ goals visiting an Italian opponent on 2 occasions (also Roma 1-7 Bayern in 2014).
*For the 4th time, a team scored 6+ away goals in a Champions League knockout stage. The previous cases:
26/02/2014, Schalke 1-6 Real Madrid,
04/03/2025, PSV 1-7 Arsenal,
18/02/2026, Qarabag 1-6 Newcastle.
*Bayern striker Harry Kane has reached 50 goals in UCL taking 66 games for this; only Erling Haaland (49) and Ruud van Nistelrooy (62) have ever reached this milestone in fewer games.
*Bayern have won a Champions League knockout round tie by 8+ goals for the third time. The precedents:
12-1 vs Sporting in 2008-09 (Round of 16, 5-0 and 7-1),
10-2 vs Arsenal in 2016-17 (Round of 16, 5-1 and 5-1).
No other side has ever done it more than once
Atlético Madrid vs Tottenham 5-2, 2-3 (agg 7-5)
*Atletico Madrid have last scored 5+ goals in a European Cup/Champions League knockout match on 1 October 1958, when they beat Drumcondra 5-1 away.
*Atlético’s first three goals against Tottenham Hotspur in the first leg came in the 14 minutes 59 seconds from kick-off: the earliest a side has ever been three goals ahead in a Champions League knockout stage match.
*Atlético have scored 4 goals in the first half of a Champions League match for the first time in their history.
*Atlético led 4-0 already after 22 minutes; it is the earliest 4-0 lead in the history of the Champions League, after Real Madrid’s vs Dinamo Zagreb in 2011 (after 20 minutes).
*Tottenham’s Antonín Kinský became the first goalkeeper in Champions League history, substituted within the first 20 minutes of a match not because of injury.
Newcastle vs Barcelona 1-1, 2-7 (agg 3-8)
*For just the third time, an English team conceded 7+ goals in a European competition match, after:
Köln vs Tottenham 8-0 (1995, Intertoto Cup),
Tottenham vs Bayern 2-7 (2019, UCL).
*Barcelona became the first team in Champions League history to take the lead three times in the first half of a match.
*Lamine Yamal has become the youngest player (aged 18 years and 248 days) to reach 10 goals in Champions League, surpassing Kylian Mbappé’s previous record set in 2017 (at 18 years 350 days).
Yamal is only third player to score 10+ goals in the Champions League as a teenager, after Mbappé (13) and Erling Haaland (10).
*Robert Lewandowski became the oldest player (37 years 209 days) to score a brace in a Champions League match, overtaking Filippo Inzaghi for Milan against Real Madrid in November 2010 (37 years 86 days).
*Lewandowski became also the oldest player to score in the knockout rounds of the competition.
*Barcelona have scored 7+ goals scored in a European Cup/Champions League match for the third time, after:
07/03/2012: 7-1 vs Bayer Leverkusen,
13/09/2016: 7-0 vs Celtic Glasgow.
*Last international match at Camp Nou with 9+ goals was Barcelona 7-2 Trabzonspor on 3 October 1990.
Galatasaray vs Liverpool 1-0, 0-4 (agg 1-4)
*Mohamed Salah became the first African player to score 50 Champions League goals (Liverpool 47, Basel 2, Roma
Paris St. Germain vs Chelsea 5-2, 3-0 (agg 8-2)
*Chelsea conceded 5 goals in a Champions League game for just the second time, after a 1-5 defeat to Barcelona on 18 April 2000.
*Chelsea have conceded 8 goals across a competitive two-legged tie (domestic and European) for the first time in their history.
*Paris St. Germain became the first team to score 10 goals thanks to its substitutes in a Champions League season beating the Kaiserslautern’s record of the competition (9 such goals in 1998-99).
*Achraf Hakimi became the first defender in Champions League history to provide 5+ assists in two different seasons (also 2024-25).
Real Madrid vs Manchester City 3-0, 2-1 (agg 5-1)
*Federico Valverde became just the second player to score a first half hat-trick against an English opponent in the Champions League after Lionel Messi for Barcelona against Arsenal in April 2010.
*Valverde’s hat-trick became the 2nd achieved by a Uruguayan in the Champions League, after Walter Pandiani’s for Deportivo vs PSG on 7 March 2001.
*Valverde is the second midfielder to score a hat-trick in the European Cup/Champions League in Real Madrid’s history. The first was Pirri, against AEL Larnaka on 18 September 1968.
*Thibaut Courtois became just the second goalkeeper to assist multiple goals in a single edition of the Champions League, after Jose Molina for Deportivo in 2003-04.
Courtois assisted for Mbappé against Kairat on 30 September 2025 and for Valverde against Manchester City on 11 March 2026.
*Courtois has now provided more assists than any other goalkeeper in Champions League history (3, two for Real Madrid and one for Chelsea).
*Thiago Pitarch became the youngest (18 years 220 days) Spanish player to start a Champions League knockout match for Real Madrid, beating Raúl’s record from March 1996 (at 18 years 253 days vs Juventus).
*Pep Guardiola have lost both legs of a Champions League knockout stage tie for the fourth time, with three of those coming against Real Madrid (also in 2013-14 and 2024-25).
*Real Madrid eliminated the same opponent (Manchester City) in the Champions League in 3 consecutive seasons.
There are only 2 precedents in the history of competition. In both cases, the winning side was again Real Madrid.
They eliminated Atlético in 4 seasons in a row (2014, 2015, 2016, 2017) and then Liverpool in 3 (2021, 2022, 2023).
Bayer Leverkusen vs Arsenal 1-1, 0-2 (agg 1-3)
*Arsenal have reached the Champions League quarter-finals for the third consecutive season. It is only the second time in the club’s history they have achieved such a streak, after 2007-08 to 2009-10.
*Eberechi Eze became the second Englishman to score for Arsenal in the Premier League, League Cup, FA Cup and Champions League in the same season, after Theo Walcott in 2012-13.
Bodo/Glimt vs Sporting Lisbon 3-0, 0-5 (agg 3-5)
*Bodo/Glimt’s win in the first leg is the biggest victory for a Norwegian team in a European Cup knockout stage match, achieved later in a season than in the month of October.
*Maxi Araújo’s goal for Sporting became the earliest ever scored in extra time in Champions League history.
*Bodø/Glimt are the first team in Champions League history to field the same starting lineup for 6 games in a row.
*Sporting took the lead in a Champions League knockout match for the first time since 2 March 1983, against Real Sociedad.
*Sporting became the first Portuguese club in history to win a Champions League knockout match by five goals.
*Sporting have overturned a three-goal deficit to progress from a knockout stage tie in a major European competition for just the second time in their history. They did it before only vs Manchester United in Cup Winners’ Cup 1963-64 quarter-finals (1-4 and 5-0).
*Sporting have last reached the quarter-finals of the European Cup/Champions League in 1983.
Statistics on Champions’ League: Play-off Round, 2nd leg (February 25)
*Countries of the 16 teams in the Round of 16:
6 England, 3 Spain, 2 Germany, 1 Norway (Bodø/Glimt). 1 Italy (Atalanta), 1 Portugal (Sporting), 1 France (PSG), 1 Turkey (Galatasaray).
Atalanta vs Borussia Dortmund (agg 4-3)
*Atalanta became the first team to qualify after losing their first leg by at least two goals in the knock-out stage of the Champions League since Liverpool against Barcelona in the 2018-19 semi-finals (0-3, 4-0).
*Atalanta are only the third Italian team to progress after losing the first leg by 2+ goals margin in the Champions League knock-out stage, after: Juventus vs Atlético Madrid in 2018-19 round of 16 (0-2, 3-0),
Roma vs Barcelona in 2017-18 quarter-finals (1-4, 3-0).
*Borussia Dortmund became the second German club to be eliminated after winning their first leg by two goals in the knock-out stage of the Champions League, after Wolfsburg against Real Madrid in the 2015-16 quarter-finals (2-0, 0-3).
Two other German clubs were eliminated such way in the European Cup era:
Nürnberg against Benfica in 1961-62 quarter-finals (3-1, 0-6),
Bayern Munich against Saint-Étienne in 1969-70 first round (2-0, 0-3).
*Lazar Samardžić’s goal at 97 minutes and 54 seconds became the latest ever scored to win a Champions League knock-out tie, surpassing Cristiano Ronaldo’s goal (also by penalty) against Juventus on 11 April 2018, at 96 minutes and 55 seconds (Real Madrid eventually lost at home 1-3 after winning away game 3-0).
Paris St. Germain vs Monaco 2-2 (agg 5-4)
*PSG have qualified for the Champions League round of 16 for the 14th consecutive season: the longest run in history at this stage for a French club.
*Monaco have been eliminated in each of their last 5 knock-out ties in European competitions, since their victory against Borussia Dortmund in the 2016-17 Champions League quarter-finals (3-2, 3-1).
*Monaco have never progressed beyond the first round of the knock-out stage in each of their last 6 campaigns in the Champions League and Europa League (2 eliminations in the group stage, 3 in the play-offs, 1 in the round of 16).
*French clubs, apart from Paris Saint-Germain, have not won any of their last 11 knock-out matches in the Champions League (3 draws, 8 defeats), since Lyon’s victory against Manchester City on 15 August 2020.
*Monaco are the second team to score against PSG while playing with ten men in a Champions League match. The first was CSKA Moscow in 2004.
*Marquinhos have played his 116th match for Paris Saint-Germain in European competitions, beating the record for a player with French clubs that belonged to Steve Mandanda – 115 (101 with Marseille, 14 with Rennes).
*Marquinhos has also scored and thus became the PSG’s joint second top scorer in the knock-out stages of the Champions League – 6 goals, only behind Kylian Mbappé (14), level with Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Désiré Doué and Ousmane Dembélé.
Real Madrid vs Benfica 2-1 (agg 3-1)
*Real Madrid have reached the last 16 for the 29th successive season in UCL.
They are still the only team never eliminated before the round of 16 in the Champions League era: 30 appearances and 30 promotions to the round of 16.
Including the European Cup era (before 1992), Real Madrid have only failed to reach the round of 16 only once in its 56 campaigns: in 1962-63 (losing in the first round to Anderlecht).
*By winning both matches against Benfica in the tie, Real Madrid have leveled the all-time record in European Cup/Champions League against them: 3 wins and 3 losses in 6 matches.
There are now only 4 opponents against whom Real Madrid have more losses than wins in the competition: Milan, Arsenal, CSKA Moscow, Lille.
*Vinícius Júnior has scored in both legs of a two-legged Champions League knock-out tie for the very first time for Real Madrid.
*Vinícius Júnior has scored in his last 5 appearances for Real Madrid in all competitions, equalling his best scoring run for the club (5 scoring games in a row also between August and September 2022).
*José Mourinho has not won any of his last 10 knock-out matches in the Champions League (4 draws, 6 defeats): the longest winless run in history for a coach in the knock-out stages of the competition.
Juventus vs Galatasaray 3-2 (agg 5-7)
*For the very first time in European Cup/Champions League history, a Turkish team have eliminated an Italian opponent in a two-legged tie.
*Galatasaray have won a Champions League knock-out tie for only the second time in history, after their victory against Schalke in the round of 16 during the 2012-13 season.
*Juventus have been eliminated in their last five Champions League knock-out ties, being previously eliminated:
by Lyon in 2019-20 (round of 16),
by Porto in 2020-21 (round of 16),
by Villarreal in 2021-22 (round of 16)
by PSV in 2024-25 (knock-out stage play-off)
The Italian club haven’t won a two-legged tie in the competition since their round of 16 win against Atlético Madrid in 2018-19 (0-2, 3-0).
*There was only one precedent in the competition before with a team that forced extra time in a two-legged tie after losing the first leg by 3+ goals and were ultimately eliminated.
In the 1969-70 round of 16, Benfica lost to Celtic 0-3 in the first leg away, then revenged with same score at home, but Celtic advanced by coin toss after a goalless extra time period).
*There was also only one precedent in the competition history with a teams that scored two goals while being down to ten men in the situation to avoid elimination.
In the 2014-15 round of 16, after a draw 1-1 at home in the first leg, PSG played the second leg with a man down due to early Ibrahimovic’s red card and managed to score twice. Their first goal (by David Luiz) forced extra time, and the second (by Thiago Silva, to the score of 2-2) took them from elimination to qualification).
Now Juventus, after Kelly’s red card, scored two goals (Gatti and McKennie) to 3-0, the score that would prevent Juve’s elimination but they eventually lost after extra time.
*Luciano Spalletti has been eliminated in 6 of his last 7 Champions League knock-out stage matches as coach.
*Victor Osimhen became Galatasaray’s all-time leading foreign scorer in the Champions League (7 goals), surpassing Mario Jardel (6).
*Weston McKennie became the third Juventus midfielder to score double-digit number of goals (10) in Champions League/European Cup, after Michel Platini (17) and Pavel Nedved (11).
