Cameroon is the Women’s African champion. The Indomitable Lionesses won the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations by defeating Malawi 3–0 yesterday in Rabat. It is a historic first title for Cameroon.
Cameroon succeeds South Africa – This triumph sees Cameroon join the exclusive club of African champions. The Indomitable Lionesses had previously won silver three times but had never before lifted the trophy.
The victory ends a long wait and rewards a squad that had already impressed during the knockout stages. Notably, Cameroon eliminated the host nation, Morocco, in the semi-finals via a penalty shootout, thanks in large part to goalkeeper Michaely Bihina.
For Malawi, the defeat should not overshadow their remarkable run in Morocco. The Scorchers were competing in their first-ever Women’s AFCON and achieved the feat of reaching the final at the first attempt. Led by sisters Tabitha and Temwa Chawinga, (winner of one IFFHS World Award), Malawi eliminated Algeria in the semi-finals before facing a highly clinical Cameroon side in the final. The team was undoubtedly one of the major revelations of the 2026 tournament.
After three previous final defeats, Cameroon has finally secured the trophy. The Indomitable Lionesses are African champions. And this victory could well mark the beginning of a new era for Cameroonian women’s football, less than a year before the 2027 World Cup in Brazil.
