Ruiz and Cucurella on the top

While Spain extended their record unbeaten run to 39 matches by defeating England (3–2) in an away game during the opening round of the 2027 Nations League, key midfielder Fabián Ruiz extended his own personal record streaks—which are even more impressive.
Ruiz remains unbeaten with the national team, a streak that has lasted since the very beginning of his international career (June 2019). He has now gone 51 games without a loss—the longest such run in football history for a player who has remained undefeated.
During the course of this streak, Spain have lost seven matches, yet the lucky midfielder managed to miss every single one of them.
Ruiz’s teammate, Marc Cucurella, also remains unbeaten in the ranks of “La Furia Roja”. However, his streak is considerably shorter—33 games. Nevertheless, he has just climbed to second place in the all-time ranking, displacing Belgium’s Leander Dendoncker.
This 31-year-old midfielder played 32 matches for the “Red Devils” between 2015 and 2023 and never suffered a defeat. During his eight-year international career, Belgium lost a total of 15 times. Remarkably, Dendoncker was absent for all 15 of those matches. In other words, he is even luckier than Fabián Ruiz!
Dendoncker currently plays at the club level for Hajduk Split. He has not been called up to the national team for over three years. It is quite possible he never will be again. And if it so happens that Ruiz and Cucurella eventually suffer a defeat, the world record in this category will immediately revert to him.
Fourth place in the ranking goes to another Spaniard, Robin Le Normand. The 29-year-old Atlético Madrid defender played for Spain over a three-year period (2003–2025) and did not suffer a single defeat in his 27 matches. His record has stalled because he has been sidelined from “La Furia Roja” for nearly a year.
Back to Ruiz. He recently broke another world record previously held by Garrincha. The legendary Brazilian went unbeaten for 49 games from the start of his “Seleção” career (losing only his 50th and final match). For Ruiz, the 2026 World Cup final against Argentina marked his 50th unbeaten game since his debut.
The only record Ruiz has yet to reach is the absolute longest unbeaten streak for the national team. However, he is closing in on it, and there isn’t far to go. That record belongs to his compatriot Carlos Marchena (57 games).
