THE ACHIEVEMENT OF ROQUE SANTA CRUZ

Santa Cruz, the 4th in history to score at 45 in top division

On August 24, Roque Santa Cruz scored a goal in the Paraguayan league for Nacional Asunción against Sportivo Luqueño (2–0). He achieved this feat shortly after celebrating his 45th birthday (his exact age at the time of the match was 45 years and 8 days).
Thus, the Paraguayan forward—who remained in remarkable form—became the fourth player in the history of football to score in a national league after reaching that age milestone.
The details are shown in the table. The record is over 100 years old and belongs to Billy Meredith, who scored in the English First Division for Manchester City in 1922 at the age of 47 years and 259 days.
Santa Cruz could attempt to challenge Meredith’s record, but to do so, he would need to remain in top-flight football for three seasons more.
Another record held by the legendary Welshman appears more attainable for Roque: scoring four league goals after the age of 45.
Antony de Ávila managed to score two such goals, whereas Wilhelm Hahnemann (who was serving as Wacker’s coach at the time and had to field himself due to a shortage of fit players) scored one.
Santa Cruz also has one such goal to his name so far. Unfortunately, he sustained an injury just minutes after scoring it and was forced to leave the pitch. He has not returned to action since, as he awaits a full recovery; however, he managed to score in three of his last five appearances in the Paraguayan league.
Only the world’s top 100 national leagues are considered here.
