Messi and Vozinha created World Cup’s oldest goal
The goal scored by Lionel Messi (39 years old) for Argentina in a 2026 World Cup Round of 32 game vs Cabo Verde (3-2) with goalkeeper Vozinha (40 years old) represented a combined age of two involved players as high as 79 years and 61 days.
This is by far the highest combined age of a goalscorer and the beaten goalkeeper in the history of the World Cup.
It surpassed the previous record from the game England vs Cameroon in 1990 (scorer Emmanuel Kundé and goalkeeper Peter Shilton) by more than four years.
The third oldest goal in this category has also occurred at the 2026 edition, with Ecuador goalkeeper Hernán Galíndez and Mexico’s striker Raúl Jiménez involved.
