Cienciano, the first foreigners scoring 6 to Brazilian club!
Cienciano (Peru) achieved on 14 August a historical win in the Copa Sudamericana’s Round of 16 first leg.
Having smashed Botafogo 6-1, they became the first ever foreign team to score 6+ goals against a Brazilian rival in CONMEBOL competitions.
*In both previous occasions when Brazilian clubs conceded so many goals, they did it against opponents from the homeland:
São Paulo vs Botafogo 7-3 (in Copa Master CONMEBOL on 08.02.1996),
Palmeiras vs Cruzeiro 7-3 (in Copa Mercosur on 22.10.1999).
*Five goals is the largest margin of defeat ever suffered by Brazilian clubs in the CONMEBOL competitions. The new Cienciano’s feat is the fourth such occasion in history (listed in the table).
*Cienciano has scored 6 goals for the second time in their history in CONMEBOL competitions, following the 6-1 win over Carabobo (Venezuela) on 31 August 2004 (also in the Copa Sudamericana).
*The previous maximum of goals scored by a Peruvian team against a Brazilian rival in the history of CONMEBOL competitions was 4 (Sporting Cristal vs Coritiba 4-1 on 10 February 2004).
*Never in the history of major international club competitions (in any confederation) has a team overturned a two-legged tie after losing the first leg by a margin of five or more goals.
Botafogo have now a chance to become the first to do so in the 2nd leg on 21 August.
