Bounou tied Schumacher’s record
Morocco’s Yassine Bounou became at World Cup 2026 the new record co-holder of the competition for penalty saves, taking into account both penalties in playing time (PT) and in shootouts (SO).
The attempt saved from Kylian Mbappe in a quarter-final vs France (0-1) was Bounou’s 4th successful, following his 3 shootout saves in the 2022 edition (2 vs Spain, 1 vs Netherlands).
Harald “Toni” Schumacher was the first goalkeeper with 4 such saves. He set his record in 1986; since then, it remains unbeaten but was tied by 5 his colleagues.
As for Bounou, his save from Mbappe is the only made by any Moroccan goalkeeper at World Cups in playing time so far.
