World Cup 2026 Statistics – Day 22 (July 2) – Round of 32

Spain vs Austria 3-0

*Unai Simón extended to 519 minutes his run without conceding in the World Cup, setting the longest unbeaten streak for a goalkeeper in the history of the competition.
The former record of Walter Zenga (Italy, 1990, 516 minutes) is finally beaten.
Simón started his streak in the 2022 edition (159 minutes) and added 360 here.

*Spain became the third team that went 5 consecutive matches without conceding a goal at the World Cup, after Italy (1990) and Switzerland (2006, 2010).

*Spain achieved their joint-second biggest victory a World Cup knockout match, along with 3-0 vs Switzerland in 1994 (Round of 16) and behind:
5-1 vs Denmark in 1986 (Round of 16)

*Spain have won a World Cup knockout round game for the first time since they won the tournament in 2010 (1-0, final against Netherlands on 11 July 2010).
They tied their round of 16 games vs Russia in 2018 and vs Morocco in 2022 losing both times on shootouts; and failed to progress from group stage in 2014.

*Spain scored multiple goals in a World Cup knockout match for the first time since 2 July 1994, against Switzerland (also 3).

*Mikel Oyarzabal became the third Spaniard to record two braces in the World Cup, and the first to do so in a single World Cup 2026, after:
Fernando Morientes (1998 and 2002)
David Villa (2006 and 2010)

*Oyarzabal is the first player in 40 years to score 2+ goals in a World Cup knockout match for Spain.
Emilio Butragueño was the last, against Denmark on 18 June 1986 (he scored four).

*Oyarzábal reached 4 goals in this edition: just one goal shy from the Spanish record in the World Cups
Emilio Butragueño has scored 5 goals in 1985, David Villa as many in 2010.

*Oyarzabal has scored 16 goals in his last 15 appearances for Spain.

*Oyarzabal scored already 13 goals for Spain in 2025-26: joint-most in the history of the team in a single season, along with David Villa in 2008-09.

*Both Oyarzabal goals were set up by Marc Cucurella. They are the first Spanish duo in the history of the World Cup to combine for such a partnership (two goals and two assists between them) in a knockout-stage match.

*Cucurella is the first Spaniard in the history of the World Cup to provide two assists in a knockout-stage match.
Only one other Spaniard had provided two in a single World Cup match: Javier De Pedro vs Paraguay (3-1) in 2002, in the group stage.

*Cucurella is the third defender with 2 assists in a 2026 World Cup match, along with:
Joshua Kimmich (Germany)
Denzel Dumfries (Netherlands).

*Pau Cubarsí (19 years) and Lamine Yamal 918) are the first pair of teenagers to start a World Cup knockout match for a team since 1958.
Pelé (17) and Jose Altafini (19) in 1958 for Brazil against Wales in the quarter-final were the last to do so.

*Austria suffered their heaviest World Cup defeat since 14 June 1978, against Netherlands (1-5).
